THE MALDIVIAN WARS - Part II (IOPGMAL2.ZIP)
By J. Cheng

Please note that this file, IOPGMAL2.ZIP, is a
sequel to the scenario IOPGMALD.ZIP - THE
MALDIVIAN WARS. Harpooners are urged, if they
haven't already, to play the IOPGMALD.ZIP
scenario before taking on this new mission
since a lot of the background and order of
battle draws on the previous mission. This
sequel hopes to tie up some loose ends in
the first mission that were left unresolved
and will be discussed in the background
description coming up. PLEASE read the
orders for the side you wish to play before
starting the scenario (IOPGMAL2.BLU text file
for the U.S. Forces and IOPGMAL2.RED text file
for the Indian Forces).

++++Background Information (both sides)++++

One month ago India declared a 200 mi. maritime
zone of exclusion around the Ihavandiffulu Atoll
where a U.S. Naval Construction Battalion had be-
gun construction of a Naval/Air base as a show of
support for the new Maldivian Pro-U.S. government.
The threatened blockade brought on a quick response
by the U.S. Navy with a BBBG (Battleship Battle
Group) consisting of the U.S. Wisconsin (BB-64),
U.S. South Carolina (CGN-37), U.S. Ingersoll (DD-990),
and U.S. Fletcher (DD-992) brought in to assure the
safe passage of a URG (Underway Replenishment
Group) from the Gulf of Aden. The results of the
first major U.S. battle at sea since WWII were mixed.
On the plus side the Indian surface fleet was wiped
from the sea along with both carriers INS Vikrant
and INS Viraat. The supply lines were also kept open to
the atoll. On the minus side, severe damage was
sustained by BBBG with loss of men and ships resulting
in the drydocking of the ships for resupply and repair.
Moreover, the Indian submarine force and land based
air force had escaped relatively unscathed which caused
more than one U.S.N. strategist to wince. The U.N.
met in emergency session and forged a cease-fire among
the combatants which the Indian Govt. begrudgingly ac-
cepted. However U.S. construction of the base con-
tinued with the partial completion of the airfield.
Last week a detachment of P-3 Orion Patrol aircraft
deployed to the airfield. After a month of silence,
the Indian Prime Minister demanded that all U.S.
military personnel leave the Maldives immediately. The
U.S. Secretary of State stated military troops will
only leave if the current government be allowed to
hold democratic elections under U.S. and U.N. super-
vision. This is the state of affairs that exist today.
